John XXIII made him a cardinal in 1960 — the first African ever raised to the College. John Paul II called him the first cardinal among all Africa's children.
Laurean Rugambwa was born on 12 July 1912 at Bukongo in Tanganyika, in what is now the Kagera Region, and was baptised with his parents at the age of eight in March 1921.
In 1960 Pope John XXIII made him a cardinal, the first native African to be raised to the College of Cardinals. He attended the Second Vatican Council from 1962 to 1965 and was Archbishop of Dar es Salaam from 1968 to 1992. Over the years he sat as a cardinal, the number of Catholics in Africa rose from twenty-five million to a hundred million, and the continent went from one cardinal to eleven. He died on 8 December 1997.
