Abdulrazak Gurnah was born and grew up on Zanzibar and came to England as a refugee at the end of the 1960s.
He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2021 for his uncompromising and compassionate penetration of the effects of colonialism and the fate of the refugee between cultures and continents. He has published ten novels; Paradise, set in colonial East Africa during the First World War, was shortlisted for the Booker Prize.
