He left school at fourteen and opened a small food kiosk in Dar es Salaam. The Bakhresa Group now mills flour, makes the Azam drinks and ice cream found across the region, and runs ferries and shipping in a dozen African countries.
Said Salim Bakhresa dropped out of school in his early teens and began selling food from a kiosk in Dar es Salaam, moving into potato crisps and then flour milling.
The Bakhresa Group he built from that is one of the largest privately held industrial groups in East and Southern Africa — grain milling, beverages under the Azam name, packaging, petroleum, and the Azam Marine ferries that carry most of the passenger traffic between Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar. It operates in more than a dozen African countries and employs tens of thousands of people. He is the most substantial industrialist Tanzania has produced.
