He ran the 1974 Commonwealth 1500 metres from the front the whole way and broke the world record doing it, then took Olympic silver in 1980.
Filbert Bayi won a track and field medal for Tanzania at the 1980 Summer Olympics, alongside Suleiman Nyambui.
His 3:32.2 at the 1974 Commonwealth Games in Christchurch — led from gun to tape — was a world record, and is still cited among the finest middle-distance races run. Sebastian Coe took the record in Zurich in 1979.
