She qualified in 1969, the first Tanzanian woman to hold a medical degree, and spent the following half-century making room for the ones behind her.
Esther Daniel Mwaikambo was born in 1940 and became Tanzania's first woman doctor on graduating MD from the Peoples' Friendship University in Moscow in 1969.
She took a master's in paediatrics at the University of Dar es Salaam in 1977, a diploma in childhood infectious diseases and immunology at London's Institute of Child Health in 1982, and a certificate in behavioural sciences at Harvard in 1995. She is a senior paediatrician and Professor of Paediatrics and Child Health at Hubert Kairuki Memorial University, founded the Medical Women Association of Tanzania in 1987, chaired the board of Research on Poverty Alleviation from 2001 to 2012, and served as president of the Tanzania Academy of Sciences. She was made an International Honorary Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2018.
