A law lecturer at Dar es Salaam who rewrote Tanzanian women's property rights as a minister, became the country's first woman foreign minister, and then the UN's Deputy Secretary-General.
Asha-Rose Migiro was a senior lecturer in the Faculty of Law at the University of Dar es Salaam, heading its department of constitutional and administrative law from 1992 to 1994 and of civil and criminal law from 1994 to 1997.
As Minister for Community Development, Gender and Children she spent five years putting women's property rights on a firmer legal footing — equality in public land ownership, in the division of matrimonial property and in inheritance. She became Tanzania's first woman Minister of Foreign Affairs since independence, serving from 2006, and took office as Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations on 1 February 2007. In 2012 she was appointed the Secretary-General's Special Envoy for HIV/AIDS in Africa.
